Artistic Production in Pernambuco

The place of birth of João Câmara, Francisco Brennand, Lula Cardoso Ayres, Abelardo da Hora and Mestre Vitalino now reveals new talents and that is why it is a national reference for the arts. This tradition of painters, sculptors and other artists has been passed from generation to generation in the history of the art of Pernambuco. The visitor will be amazed by the variety of styles present in museums, galleries, workshops, street corners, streets and markets. One can buy a painting by one of the most important contemporary Brazilian artists, find a new anonymous talent or simply take home an exotic piece.

Olinda is, no doubt, a very particular case in the art of Pernambuco, since it has the highest concentration of artists and craftsmen in Brazil. The city breaths art in an absolutely spontaneous manner. The visitor, during a walk through the narrow streets and hills of the city, frequently bumps into artists producing their pieces outdoors, inspired by nature and mysticism. Techniques include paintings, sculptures, print works, batiques, wood engraving, masks and giant dolls.

In Recife the Francisco Brennand Museum/Workshop, located in an old sugar mill farmhouse, is a trip through a scenery of exotism, beauty and mystery, where two thousand pieces of the artist are on show – a result of his creativity and technique. The Aloísio Magalhães Metropolitan Art Gallery, located in a mansion by the Capibaribe river, has important pieces by artists such as Abelardo da Hora, João Câmara, Cícero Dias and Welington Virgolino, among others.

It is through handcrafting, however, that the people of Pernambuco show their creativity and sensibility. Unique pieces made of unusual materials: clay, iron, wood, straw, horns, bone, snakes, leather and glass. All this transformed into tinsmith, tapestry, carved work, lace and monumental sculptures.

Caruaru –considered by Unesco “America´s Larges Center of Figurative Art”, the city is a school of “clay masters”, followers of Mestre Vitalino. The visitor should not miss the Alto do Moura, the market and the museums. In Tracunhaém the spotlight is occupied by ludic and religious ceramics. In Goiana county one finds the famous ceramic images of saints (santos sanfoneiros) and angels (anjos cangaceiros). Águas Belas is famous for its indigenous handcraft.
